比較表現（１）

He is not so much a writer as a journalist. （= He is a journalist rather than a writer. ）

He cannot so much as write his own name. （= He cannot even write his own name. ）

He went out without so much as saying "Good-bye!" （～もなしに）

He has two girlfriends, but he wishes to have as many more.

これは、as many の後に as that が省略されていると考える。that は 「2人のガールフレンド」 のことだ。つまり、「あと（2人のガールフレンドと）同じ数だけ欲しい」 ということ。

The children were working like so many ants.
The boys climbed the tree like so many monkeys.

これも、それぞれ ants, monkeys の後に as that が省略されていると考える。つまり、「子供たち（少年たち）と同数の蟻（サル）のように」 という意味。全体の訳はそれぞれ、

「子供たちはまるで蟻のように働いていた。」
「少年たちはまるでサルのように木に登った。」

となる。

as many, as much, as wise, as beautiful ...... とあったら、その後に as that が省略されていて、many や wise の意味を文脈に合わせて限定的にしていると考えるわけだ。
